Learn How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

Before you start checking your car oil, you’ll need to figure out what’s going on under the hood. Check your owner’s manual to orient yourself. Some cars have electronic oil monitors that don’t have a traditional dipstick, and you can monitor your oil level from the dashboard.

If you have a traditional dipstick, you can check your oil levels manually instead. Here are the steps of how to check the oil level in your car like a pro:

  • Park on level ground and let the engine cool off before you begin.
  • Pop the hood and locate the dipstick. Check your owner’s manual if you need assistance.
  • Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag.
  • Put the dipstick back in the tube, and pull it all the way out again.
  • Look for the top of the oil streak. Does it land within a cross-hatched area on your dipstick? Does it fall between two indicator lines? Then your oil is at the proper levels.
  • Is your oil level low? Grab a funnel and the manufacturer-recommended oil type. Then add oil in small amounts until you’ve reached the right level.

Why Check Your Car’s Oil Level?

Checking your car oil is a great way to monitor your oil level and oil condition. Most Bardstown and Shepherdsville drivers schedule two oil changes a year. If you perform monthly oil checks at home, you can easily spot any leaks or issues – and you can get them fixed much faster! As long as everything looks good, you can drive with total peace of mind. However if you notice any smoking or excessive heat from your engine, it’s always a good idea to visit the service center.
