How to Improve Gas Mileage in 6 Easy Ways

Keep up with regular maintenance

Perhaps one of the most effective ways to improve your gas mileage is to keep up with routine maintenance.Your gas mileage can be affected by dirty air filters, worn-out spark plugs, improper tire inflation, and other related factors. Consult your owner’s manual for your make and model’s specific service schedule.

Limit idling

Did you know that idling actually uses more fuel than restarting your car? If you’re picking up a friend and waiting for them to come outside, we recommend turning off your vehicle to conserve fuel.

Many new Ford models are equipped with Auto Start-Stop technology. This system automatically shuts off your engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and turns it back on when it’s time to drive again, making it easier than ever to conserve every last drop of fuel.

Remove excess weight

Remove any unnecessary bulky items from your vehicle, as they weigh your car down and force it to work harder to move forward. You should also remove any external items from your vehicle that you aren’t using, including bike racks or roof boxes, as they create extra wind resistance.

Drive at a steady speed

Driving at excessive speeds will decrease your fuel economy. Always follow the speed limit and use cruise control whenever possible. Avoid rapidly accelerating and braking, as these actions will quickly burn through gas.

Plan ahead

As we mentioned, idling is harmful to your fuel economy, so plan your trips ahead of time and try to avoid stop-and-go traffic in Shepherdsville and Fort Knox whenever possible.

Coast when possible

Our last tip on improving fuel efficiency is allowing your vehicle to coast when it’s safe to do so. If a red light is ahead and no one is in front of you, take your foot off the gas pedal and let your vehicle coast to a stop.

This method can also be used if you’re trying to save gas while driving on hills. Accelerate slowly as you go up the hill, and once you reach the top, remove your foot from the gas and let the momentum of your vehicle coast you downhill.
